 When
we are talking about dangerous ships we can not miss the Gas carriers.
This type of merchant ships are very explodable an can make very
serious damages to the nature just for minutes in well working atmosphere.
The ship with name Alstergas is part of Ahrenkiel fleet and has
a deadweight of 4,999 tdw. The cargo capacity of this ships is 4,116
cubic meters, devided into 4 bilobes. The ship has a length of 99.91
m and breadth of 15.40 m. The draught of Alstergas is 6.69 m. The
gas carrier is designed to carry one of the most dangerous gasses
– LPG, Ethylene, VCM and NH3. These gasses are well explodable
and their transportation can cause a serious problem to the ship,
but Alstergas is good designed and equipped in the best technologies
for the year it was built, and that was 1991.
The main engine
of the Gas Carrier is MaK 9M453C, MRC with a power of 3,000 kW at
600 rpm. This engine is not enough to the whole ship and cannot
made the main purpose to be well maneuverable and  fast.
So there is also two auxiliary generators to give a electricity
to the ship and all other equipment of it. The auxiliary generators
are Caterpillar 3508 DI-TA each with power of 600 kW at 1,800 rpm.
All these engines are giving enough power to the vessel to run with
crossing speed of 14 knots. The maximum speed of the ship is nearly
16 knots, but there is too high price for it. The ship is also equipped
with bowtruster for easy maneuvers in port.
Some kind of ships are not beautiful for the eye, but
a lot of beautiful for the mind. And the merchant ship Alstergas,
property of Ahrenkiel Group is one of these vessels. It is some
kind of bomb, and you may stay on it. Very interesting and very
beautiful for your mind.
