One
of the largest container vessels built ever, is NYK Vega. The vessel
has deadweight of 94,000 metric tons. The vessel is property of
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha and with the capacity of 8,600 TEU
is in the group of giant container vessels. The gross tonnage of
the ship is 97,825 metric tons. The length of NYK Vega is 338.20
meters, the beam is 44 meters and the designed fully loaded draft
is 14.50 meters. According to IMO TEU capacity of the vessel is
9,012, but in calculations of NYK Line the vessel can carry not
much that 8,600 TEU. I had explained the difference between IMO
calculations and companies calculations and will not pay much
attention to that fact. But NYK Vega is vessel built in 2006 and
is definitely container from new generation. The vessel has built
in the very high qualited ship-yard of Hyundai Heavy Industries
and managed by NYK Ship-management Pte. Ltd. And NYK Vega is the
pearl in the crown of NYK Line, because the vessel is not only large,
profitable and modern, but also very beautiful and ecological. With
building of this new generation vessels, ship-owners are trying
to reduce the pollution of the sea and to increase the profitability
of each vessel. This is very good not only for the companies owning
vessels, but also for the whole world, because of reducing the expenses
of each ship-owner in fuel and lubricant oil point of view, the
whole earth will be saved. The
vessel NYK Vega is one of the most modern container ships built
ever. The vessel is the new generation ship is new improved engine,
with lower consumption of fuel and lower CO2 emissions. The main
engine of the vessel is MAN B&W 12K98MC with full power of 87,060
hp, which allows to the ship to reach a speed of 25 knots in full
power and the cruising speed is about 24.6 knots. The bridge and
engine room are also improved for easier operations on sea and that
is the main reason this ship to be so easy for serving and so profitable
for the company. The crew members are also with decreased number,
but in spite of this fact the work of the officers is decreased
to minimum. NYK Vegas bridge is fully equipped with the newest
navigational equipment and the correction of the charts, work is
made to be easy with 2 different electronic chart types, with integrated
AIS and ARPA in them. This is making also the navigation of the
ship easy and safety. The work of the chief officer is mostly directed
to loading, stowing of the containers and discharging. But with
newly created software this is quite easy and chief mates will forget
for the long cargo plans of the ship. The programs are calculating
ships stability, steadiness and stowing for easier discharging.
The main work of the chief officer is only to look for the proper
work of the systems, computers and programs. That is decreasing
the work, the working hands needed on the ship and increase the
