When
we are talking about large and well known chemical tankers, we should
not miss ships like, this one, which we will introduce in this article.
The chemical tanker Stolt Falcon is the ship, buit in 1978 and gave
the beginning of whole class chemical tankers in the company of
Stolt Nielsen. The chemical tanker is neither newly refurbished
nor most modern ship, but in 2007 it got the award of ST&T for
ship of 2007. The ship is really large for this type of cargo ships.
Stolt Falcon has length of 177.00 meters, beam of 28.00 meters and
draft of 6.70 meters. The chemical tanker has deadweight of 37,200
metric tons and this is really large capacity for vessel carrying
so dangerous type of cargo. The ship was built in 1978 into the
ship-yard of Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd.
with hull number 3004. The ship is from the highest class of danger
according to IMO specifications, carrying chemicals from class A.
Stolt Falcon really is very safety, not because of the cargo on
board, or because of the safety equipment, but mostly because of
the well organized work on board. Of course this is the captain’s
job, but he really did it perfect. The ship is part of the Stolt
family from the first year of building. Stolt Falcon is sailing
under Liberian
flag and the ship’s crew is from multinations – Russians,
Ukrainians, Norwegians and many more.
The
ship was large cargo capacity for such type of ship, as I already
mentioned. Typical for chemical tankers is large number of small
tanks, which will not have large capacity of cargo, mostly due to
financial purposes. It is proved that smaller chemical tankers are
earning much more than largest one. The number of tanks on board
of Stolt Falcon is 54 tanks. The large number of manifolds in the
middle of the ship is giving the ability of the ship to be loaded
from many points, absolutely separating the cargo on board. It is
typical for chemical tankers that only a little mixture of two substances
can cause explosion and the ship is temporary in danger. That is
why, the ship can be loaded and discharged from different lines,
without mixing the cargo. You should think that because the ship
is older, the cargo control system is older too. That is not exactly
right, because the ship was refitted with newer equipment and the
cargo system was upgraded for easier work and higher production.
Such investing into the ship’s system is returning quickly
to the ship-owner and this is the primary idea of each company working
in maritime transport.
